Sam Foreman is a Computational Scientist in the AI/ML group at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), Argonne National Laboratory. His work focuses on the large-scale distributed training of AI models for scientific applications, running across thousands of GPUs on leadership-class systems including Aurora and Polaris. He is a co-lead of the Models/Pre-Training team for AuroraGPT, Argonne's effort to build foundation models for science, and a member of the DeepSpeed Technical Steering Committee. His research spans foundation-model pre-training at scale, genome-scale language models, and machine-learning methods for lattice quantum chromodynamics. He has been a finalist for the ACM Gordon Bell Prize (2024, MProt-DPO) and the ACM Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modeling (2025, AERIS), and shared the ACM Gordon Bell Special Prize for COVID-19 Research (2022, GenSLMs). He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Iowa and B.S. degrees in Engineering Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
